Clock Tower+

Updated: Jul 14, 2023

One prominent landmark in Makkah is the clock tower, known as Abraj Al Bait, located right in front of Masjid al-Haram Gate 1, King Abdul Aziz. This area boasts four main buildings, each offering unique accommodation options and a wide range of amenities for pilgrims. Let's delve into these buildings and the hotels they house.

Abraj Al Bait, standing majestically, features a total of seven 5-star hotels, including Swissotel Al Maqam, Al Marwa Rotana, Raffles Makkah Palace, Movenpick Hotel & Residence Hajar Tower Makkah, Pullman Zamzam Makkah, Swissotel Makkah, and Fairmont Makkah Clock Royal Tower. Additionally, it offers a 4-star hotel, Retaj Al Bait. These hotels provide luxurious amenities, exquisite dining options, and exceptional service to ensure a comfortable stay during your spiritual journey.

Adjacent to Abraj Al Bait on its right side is Safwah Towers, which houses three hotels: Royal Orchid Makkah Hotel, Al Ghufran Tower, and Dorar Al Eiman. Safwah Towers provide comfortable accommodations at a comparatively more affordable price, making it an excellent choice for those seeking a balance between cost and quality.

To the left of the clock tower stands Elaf Kind Hotel, a standalone hotel known for its convenience and proximity to the holy sites. This hotel offers a comfortable stay and easy access to the spiritual landmarks in Makkah.

Another notable hotel complex in the area is Makkah Towers. With its own unique charm, Makkah Towers provide a range of amenities and services to cater to diverse preferences.

You can find a food court at the clock tower offering various food options, including popular fast-food chains like Burger King, KFC, McDonald's, Pizza Hut, and Smash Burgers. The food court also presents a selection of Indian and Pakistani cuisine, ensuring a diverse range of culinary experiences. Additionally, the complex boasts three shopping floors, including a basement area where you can find reasonably priced items such as abayas, thobes, gold, jewellery, and other souvenirs to bring back home, there is also a Hypermarket on the 4th floor.

Safwah Towers also features its own food court, offering a variety of Asian cuisine options, and provides a more budget-friendly shopping experience compared to the clock tower.

Makkah Towers further enhance the dining experience with its own food court, which includes popular eateries like Al Tazaj and other restaurants, during peak times, it's important to be prepared for long queues.

Whether you choose to stay in Abraj Al Bait, Safwah Towers, Elaf Kind, or Makkah Towers, you'll have access to an array of dining options and shopping experiences. From international cuisines to local delights, you'll find diverse culinary choices to suit your preferences. Additionally, the shopping floors offer a variety of products, including clothing, accessories, and souvenirs.

While the hotels in Makkah boast 5-star ratings, it is important to note that there can be variations in the quality and condition of the rooms. As these hotels were built over a decade ago, some rooms may now appear dated. It is essential to consider this aspect when selecting your accommodation.

One such example is Makkah Towers, previously known as Hilton Towers. While it holds a 4-star rating, the rooms may be perceived as dated compared to the other 5-star hotels. However, Makkah Towers compensates for this with its lower price point and exceptional accessibility to Masjid al-Haram, providing you with convenient proximity to the holy sites.

Additionally, Elaf Kind Hotel, labelled as a 5-star property, might be considered more of a 4-star hotel in terms of its overall quality and amenities. It is important to manage expectations when booking accommodations, considering the variation in room quality across different hotels.

Despite any variations in room conditions, each hotel within these complexes features its own set of restaurants, ensuring that you have access to delicious meals throughout your stay. These in-house restaurants offer a wide range of culinary options, serving food every day to cater to the diverse tastes of guests.

It typically takes approximately four minutes to reach the Haram from any of the hotel rooms. All of these rooms are equipped with built-in speakers for the Adhan. This means that when you leave your room, you will have enough time to reach the Haram and participate in the Salah prayer.

Fairmont Makkah holds a special place in my heart as it has been my favourite hotel. I have been fortunate to stay here four times, Alhamdulillah. One of the standout features is its convenient access within the Abraj Al Bait complex, offering private lifts that take you directly to the hotel lobby. Moreover, it boasts the largest number of rooms within the complex, catering to various preferences such as double rooms, triples, quads, and spacious suites.

During non-peak times in the summer, you can book a rooms starting from £150 on special prices, which includes breakfast. The hotel also boasts a diverse range of restaurants, from a steakhouse to a Saudi restaurant. Additionally, there are charming cafes that offer breath taking views of the Haram. Swissotel

In 2015, I had the pleasure of staying at Swissotel, and it was truly an excellent experience. One of the major advantages of choosing this hotel in Abraj Al Bait was the direct lift access from the ground floor to your room floor, bypassing the need to take a lift to the lobby. Moreover, Swissotel offers three convenient entrances: one from the basement parking, one inside the mall, and another on Ajyad Street.

The hotel primarily offers a variety of room types, including king beds, twin rooms, triple beds, and suites. It also features interconnecting rooms, making it an ideal choice for families. However, one minor drawback I encountered was the relatively small size of the bathroom, especially the shower area. It required careful handling to prevent the Ihram from getting wet easily.

On the bright side, Swissotel served a fantastic breakfast with a delightful selection of freshly squeezed juices. This exceptional experience has earned Swissotel a spot in my top two hotels within the Clock Tower complex.

Swissotel Al Maqam

Swissotel Maqam should not be confused with Swissotel Makkah. This hotel is relatively new and boasts a more contemporary design. While it shares many similarities with Swissotel, it lacks the convenience of direct lift access to your room. Instead, guests need to take one lift to the lobby before accessing their rooms, however it makes up for it with the newer rooms and larger bathrooms.

Swissotel Maqam's main entrance is situated on the side road between the Clock Tower and Makkah Tower. This particular road is bustling with takeaways, including the legendary Al Baik. So, guests can easily explore a variety of dining options in the vicinity.

Movenpick

During my visit in 2017, I had the opportunity to see my uncle who was staying at Movenpick Makkah. The hotel maintained a clean and tidy environment, offering a simple and hassle-free experience. However, I did observe that the rooms had a somewhat dated appearance. Despite this, the hotel compensated for it with its excellent location.

Movenpick Makkah provides a variety of room options, including king rooms, twin rooms, triple rooms, suites, and family rooms. This ensures that guests have a suitable accommodation choice based on their preferences and group size. Additionally, the hotel features a fine dining restaurant, allowing guests to enjoy a delectable culinary experience during their stay. They also have a chocolate hour, where complimentary chocolate indulgence are served.
